Plenty of businesses pay an agency for something they could do themselves, then wonder why nothing moved. The truth about ranking higher on Google is that there is no secret. There is an ordered list of moves, some fast and some slow, and the businesses that climb are the ones that actually work the list.
This is that list, in the order I would do it. Start at the top. Each move builds on the one before it, and the early ones cost nothing but effort.
First, get clear on what you are ranking in
When you search a service near you, Google shows two things that matter. The map pack is the little map with three businesses pinned on it near the top. Below it are the regular links, where websites compete.
These two are won differently. The map pack is driven mostly by your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and your location. The links below are driven mostly by your website and the content on it. A complete plan touches both, but if you want the fastest wins, the map pack is where you start, because that is where the highest-intent local searchers look first. If you want the full background, start with what local SEO is.
Move 1: Max out your Google Business Profile
This is the highest-return work you can do, and it is free. Your Google Business Profile is what powers the map pack, and most businesses leave half of it blank.
Go through it field by field and fill in everything:
- Pick the most accurate primary category, then add secondary categories for every other service you offer.
- List your services individually with a short description for each.
- Set correct hours, including holidays, so you do not look closed when you are open.
- Add recent photos. Real photos of your work and team beat stock images and signal an active business.
- Use a local phone number and a consistent business name, exactly as it appears elsewhere.
A complete, active profile tells Google you are relevant and real. An abandoned one tells Google to favor the competitor who keeps theirs current. This one move alone moves more businesses up the map pack than any other.
Move 2: Build a steady flow of recent reviews
Reviews are a top ranking signal in local search, and they keep selling for you after you rank. What Google looks at is not only your star average but how many reviews you have, how recent they are, and whether you respond.
The recency part trips up most owners. A burst of reviews from two years ago does little now. You want a steady trickle every month, which means asking has to be a habit, not an afterthought.
Make it automatic. After a job is done or a patient checks out, send a quick text or email with a direct link to your review page. Most happy customers will leave one if you ask and make it a two-tap task. Reply to every review you get, the glowing ones and the critical ones, because Google and future customers both notice an owner who shows up. We lay out the full system in how to get more Google reviews.
Move 3: Make your business info match everywhere
Google trusts businesses whose details line up across the web. Your name, address, and phone number, sometimes called NAP, appear on your website, your profile, and directories like Yelp and Bing. When they all agree, you look stable and legitimate. When an old address or a dead number shows up somewhere, that trust slips and so do your rankings.
Pick one exact version of your name, address, and phone, then audit the major listings and fix anything that disagrees. You do not need to chase hundreds of sites. Get the big directories right and you have covered most of the value.
Move 4: Build real service pages on a fast site
Now the website side. To rank in the regular links, Google needs pages that clearly match what people search. A med spa should have separate pages for Botox, fillers, and laser treatments, not one “services” page that lists them in a row. Each focused page is a chance to rank for that exact search.
To know which searches to target, do a little keyword research for local businesses, then build each page around one clear service and the way customers actually phrase it. Run each page through an on-page SEO checklist so the title, headings, and content all point at the same search.
None of it matters if the page is slow or breaks on a phone. Most local searches are on mobile, and a sluggish site loses visitors before your offer loads. If that is a weak spot, fix it first. We cover why in why a slow website costs you customers.
Move 5: Earn a handful of quality local links and mentions
Links from other reputable websites tell Google you are prominent. You do not need a flood, and you should never buy them. A few real ones from local sources do more than dozens of junk links.
Good sources for a service business:
- Your local chamber of commerce or business association
- Local news coverage, sponsorships, or community events
- Industry directories that are genuinely relevant to your trade
- Partners and suppliers who can link to you from their sites
Each of these also tends to create a clean citation, so the work compounds. This is the slowest of the moves, which is exactly why it is last. Do the first four first.
Common mistakes that stall your climb
- Chasing tricks instead of doing the basics. Owners hunt for a hidden hack while their profile sits half-empty. The boring fundamentals are what actually move rankings.
- Buying reviews or links. Both violate Google’s rules and can get your listing suspended or your site demoted. The damage outlasts any short bump.
- Optimizing once and walking away. Local SEO rewards upkeep. Set it and forget it loses to the competitor who keeps showing up.
- Stuffing keywords into your business name. Adding “best cheapest emergency” to your name breaks Google’s policy and risks suspension.
- Ranking but never measuring. If you do not track where you stand and what visitors do next, you cannot tell what is working. Decide what to watch using what to track in analytics.
- Forgetting the call. A top ranking means nothing if the phone rings and nobody answers. Capturing the lead is half the job.
How aipple handles this for you
You can do all of this yourself, and many owners do. What we sell is the consistency most owners cannot spare time for: working the list every week instead of in a burst that fades. We optimize your profile, build the review engine, fix your listings, and create the service pages that rank.
We also close the gap most ranking advice ignores. Once you are showing up and the calls come in, we make sure each one gets answered and booked, so the traffic you fought for turns into actual customers instead of missed voicemails.
